One of the most fundamental decisions in any air conditioning project in Pakistan is whether to go with a ducted system or a ductless (split) system. Both have their place, and the right choice depends on your building type, budget, and how you plan to use the space.
Ducted Air Conditioning Systems
In a ducted system, conditioned air is produced centrally — either by an air handling unit (AHU), fan coil unit (FCU) connected to a chiller, or a central packaged unit — and distributed throughout the building through a network of sheet metal or flexible ducts. Supply air reaches rooms through ceiling or wall-mounted supply grilles, and return air is collected back to the central unit through return ducts.
Advantages of Ducted AC in Pakistan
- Invisible installation — All ductwork runs within false ceilings, maintaining a clean architectural interior with no visible indoor units
- Better fresh air control — Ducted systems can incorporate controlled fresh air intakes, filtration, and humidity control more effectively
- Uniform air distribution — When designed correctly, ducted systems provide more even air distribution across large open spaces like halls, lobbies, and open-plan offices
- Ideal for large spaces — Banquet halls, hospital wards, airport lounges, and shopping malls are best served by ducted systems
Disadvantages
- Higher civil works cost (false ceiling, duct space, access panels)
- Less flexible zone control (all rooms on one AHU get the same supply air temperature)
- Requires more space within the building fabric
Ductless Split and VRF Systems
Ductless systems deliver refrigerant directly to individual indoor units mounted in each room or zone. The most common types in Pakistan are wall-mounted split units (for individual rooms) and VRF multi-split systems (for multiple zones from one outdoor unit).
Advantages of Ductless Systems in Pakistan
- Individual zone control — Every room or zone has its own temperature setting
- Faster installation — No major civil works for duct spaces or false ceilings needed solely for HVAC
- Lower installation cost for medium-size buildings
- Energy efficiency — Inverter-driven VRF systems are among the most efficient commercially available
- Suitable for retrofit — Can be added to existing buildings without major structural modifications
Disadvantages
- Indoor units are visible in each room (though cassette and concealed types minimise this)
- Multiple refrigerant joints across the building require careful quality control during installation
- Fresh air integration requires additional ducting or separate ventilation

For new residential villas and houses in Islamabad, a ductless VRF or multi-split system is the most popular choice today, offering individual room control and strong energy efficiency. For commercial buildings with large open spaces like marriage halls, hotels, and hospitals, a ducted system with AHUs is typically superior. For medium office buildings, VRF with cassette or concealed indoor units provides the best balance of aesthetics and performance.
